The Life of Saint Elisabeta of Pasarea

Saint Elisabeta (Lazar) of Pasarea lived between 1970 and 2014, being one of the greatest hermits and ascetics of our times, known for her life of prayer and the spiritual gifts received from God.

Born on May 7, 1970, in the commune of Moldova Sulita, Suceava county, she bore the secular name Rodica Lazar. At the age of only 15, in 1985, she entered the community of the Pasarea Monastery, near Bucharest. After three years of monastic life, in 1988, she was tonsured into monasticism, receiving the name Teodora.

In 2003, feeling the call to a more secluded life, she withdrew into solitude on Mount Giumalau, where she lived as a hermit, in strict asceticism, prayer, and contemplation. In 2007 she received the Great Schema, taking the name Elisabeta.

On June 6, 2014, Saint Elisabeta departed to the Lord, remaining in the memory of those who knew her as a humble and illumined ascetic, hermit of Mount Giumalau.

In the working session of July 1, 2025, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved her canonization with the title of Saint Elisabeta of Pasarea, with her feast day celebrated on June 5.
